Where Are They Now? Featuring: Ryan Leaf

rlIn retrospect, few quarterbacks would fare well in Ryan Leaf’s position. You’re the second-overall pick, after future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. Not only are you the dude taken right after the guy with the “laser, rocket arm,” but you play quarterback.

Your career and your fate are forever tied to the success of Peyton Manning.

It’s a shadow few men could escape and was certainly beyond the capability of Leaf, who by all accounts was a jerk in the locker room and lazy in the film room. While Leaf’s plight is one of the most famous in NFL draft lore, his story certainly isn’t unique — plenty of players have come into the NFL with high expectations and failed to meet them.

Leaf pissed off his teammates, was belligerent with the media and was awful on the field. After two seasons he was waived by the San Diego Chargers, and after brief stints with Tampa Bay, Dallas, and Seattle, his NFL career was over after just three years.

Now:

After retiring in 2002, Leaf earned his bachelor’s degree from Washington State in 2005 and went on to work as a volunteer quarterback coach with Texas A&M. He seemed to come to terms with his legacy, but in 2008, Leaf resigned after improperly soliciting pain medication from a player.

This incident seemed to be just the beginning of a sad, new chapter in Leaf’s life, as multiple arrests for felony burglary and drug-related crimes culminated into a five-year prison sentence with 15 months of substance abuse treatment.

After just two years, Leaf was released from prison. He had been serving time in Montana since being arrested in March 2012 on burglary and drug charges. Leaf, who was trying to steal prescription pills, broke into two homes in one weekend in 2012. Leaf was supposed to spend at least 15 months in a treatment facility, however, he was kicked out of treatment in January 2013.

Although he’s out of prison, Leaf is still on probation and has been placed under supervision of the Great Falls Probation and Parole Department.

There’s still a chance that Leaf could be extradited to Texas for a crime he committed in 2008. In the Texas case, Leaf pleaded guilty to seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud. Leaf violated the terms of his Texas probation when he was arrested in Montana.

According to the Great Falls (Mont.) Tribune, it would take at least six months for an extradition to Texas to happen.

Two years in prison has slightly changed the way the 38-year-old quarterback looks, something everyone on the internet seemed to notice when Leaf was released.

Chicago Cubs vs. Cleveland Indians – World Series Matchup

Yes, it’s been a very long time since the Cubs have been to a World Series. Only about 76 years to be exact. They’ve finally proved that curses don’t always work like some people think they do. The Cleveland Indians also are fairly new faces to a World Series. I believe 2007 Cleveland made it to the World Series and also a few straight in the mid to late 90’s. I also heard from Twitter that Cleveland Cavaliers Ohio native and superstar basketball player Lebron James made a bet on the World Series with Former Miami Heat teammate and current Chicago Bull Dwayne Wade. I’m not quite sure what they bet, but I’m sure it’s something we’d all like to know! image

Trouble brewing in Indy?

The Indianapolis Colts are off to a rocky 1-3 start, not something them or many others thought would happen. While some may pick a number of people to blame for this odd and bizarre start the one I would pin blame on would be the General Manager Ryan Grigson. He is a man who doesn’t spend money on high dollar free agents to bring in big names to help his team. He said he wanted to add sone offensive lineman to help protect franchise QB Andrew Luck and he hit a home run drafting center Ryan Kelly out of Alabama but one guy isn’t the answer. Another big issue with the 1-3 start has been the play of the defense. They act like they don’t know how to tackle and play defense. The first few weeks were shaky without some key starters but with guys on the defensive line and some of the defensive backs coming back things should be looking up for them. Just today they parted ways with CB Antonio Cromartie and LB Sio Moore, both guys saw alot of playing time in the first four weeks. As a Colts fan I’m holding out hope that things will get better. We will see if they can turn it around and make a run at the playoffs or are watching from their couches come January.

David Ortiz the Big Papi

David Ortiz or known by baseball fans all over the world as Big Papi is gearing up one last time for a run at a fourth World Series title. He has been a staple for the Boston Red Sox since his arrival in 2003. The Boston Red Sox didn’t know what they were getting when he signed with them because of the fact he hadn’t been given a chance to be the ‘man’ for the Minnesota Twins who he spent parts of the first six years of his professional career with before being released in 2003. Former Red Sox great Pedro Martinez convinced the Red Sox to take a chance on this guy and boy has it ever paid off! Ortiz helped the Red Sox end an 86 year World Series drought as they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals by sweeping them. He also helped the Red Sox win two more World Series titles one in 2007 where they defeated the Colorado Rockies and again in 2012 where he was named the World Series MVP. Before the season started he announced that he would retire at seasons end. Every road trip the Boston Red Sox went on this year the opposing teams honored him with gifts. During a pregame ceremony this past Sunday it was announced that he would have his number 34 retired next year by the Red Sox. He also has had a bridge and and a street named after him. He’s a man who means so much for so many. He’s done so much for the game of baseball. What he has done for Boston speaks volumes and he is a man that wears his emotions on his sleeve. Boston Red Sox baseball won’t be the same without David Ortiz! So let’s gear up one last time Boston Red Sox fans and baseball fans as an astounding career is coming to a close. Big Papi you’re not leaving the game, you’re walking off! Thank you for the many memories, the big smiles, the home runs, the three World Series you’ve won so far, and most importantly just you being you David. You’re a LEGEND and the game will miss you!

Atlanta Falcons Rolling Early

falcons-4The Atlanta Falcons are off to a great start after nearly destroying the Carolina Panthers at home. Falcons currently sit at 3-1 and 1st in the NFC South Division. Matt Ryan finished the game with 503 passing yards, he is the 16 quarterback to ever accomplish that. Julio Jones also had a miraculous game finishing with an amazing 300 receiving yards. Only the 6th receiver to ever do that. Falcons go into this week preparing for The Defending Super Bowl Champs, The Denver Broncos. The Broncos are also off to a great start at 4-0 after Peyton Manning retired after last season and winning his second career super bowl. Current QB Paxton Lynch, rookie out of Memphis looks to keep the Broncos rolling after starting QB Trevor Siemian left Sundayas game with a shoulder injury, currently no timetable when he will return to the lineup. Falcons also lost a huge playmaker after LB Sean Weatherspoon left Sundays game against Carolina with a ruptured right Achilles tendon. He will miss the remainder of the season. falcons

He told the team on Monday he is certain to return after injury. Atlanta currently are 1st in the NFL in offensive points scored (152), at least 31 ahead of everyone else. They’re 1st in total yards per game (478.8). They’re 1st in yards per play (7.48), more than a whole yard against the team in second, Oakland Raiders, (6.28). They’re also 1st in passing touchdowns (11). They’re 1st in pass yards per game, (354.2). 1st in passing yards per attempt (10.52), more than two whole yards ahead of the club in second Cincinnati, (8.45). They’re 1st in passing plays of 40 plus yards (8), no other team has more than five. They are 1st in yards per reception (14.6). This just proves the Atlanta Falcons are for real this season. falcons-3
